Andy Friedman and the Other Failures
It's hard, fairly near impossible, and probably not fair, to pin this musician down - folk/rockabilly/art country - no one term quite sums up Andy, and the band that accompanies him.
Andy Friedman is not exactly one of those musicians you play while you're paying bills or cleaning house. His songs demand that you sit down and listen to them, which is why he is such a hot live act. - FAITH SALLIE, PRI's FAIR GAME
Andy Friedman sings country songs about highways, love, and booze with a growl that is unexpectedly tender... 'Taken Man' is proof that beauty doesn't have to be pretty. -- THE NEW YORKER
And yes, art country is a term used by this multiply talented performer. Among other experiences, Andy's art training and talent landed him at the New Yorker as an editorial cartoonist. All I can say is that we should be glad he also found time to expand into music.

A special Friday evening show in collaboration with the Columbia Museum of Art
Shannon Whitworth
Roots music, mountain, blue grass, and country singer Shannon Whitworth currently lives in the mountains of western North Carolina, where she has spent the last ten years refining her unique talents. Her mastery as a singer and song writer enable her to spend 4 years touring the United States with a band she co-founded, The Biscuit Burners. On clawhammer banjo and guitar, Shannon's compositions contributed depth to the bands material and have helped her gain respect as a truly talented singer and songwriter. No Expectations features ten of Shannon's most recent compositions accompanied by an all-star cast of musicians. No Expectations is one of the finest and freshest americana/country roots records you will hear today. Great singing, great writing, and great picking makes Shannon Whitworth's first solo project unforgettable.
For this special show held at the Columbia Museum of Art, Shannon will be accompanied by a band full of talented players.

Mary Hocks With Free Planet Radio, Danielle Howle, Elaine Townsend, and others.
CD release show
Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboardist Mary Hocks releases her first CD, Spinning the Sky, at this talent filled show. Mary's music is folk pop infused with blues, rock, Indian, middle eastern, and traditional jazz flavors.
As a songwriter, Mary's lyrics tumble forth with poetic grace, revealing insights that invite the listener to read along as she sings. The show will feature Mary accompanied by the singing and eclectic contributions of some of the best players from the Carolinas: Free Planet Radio, Danielle Howle, and Elaine Townsend.
Spinning the Sky has a seamless, soulful groove that I find very intoxicating. Jazzy at times, folkie at others, even when dipping into Indian or Island flavors, it remains consistent to an overall laidback vibe... Mary's songs tumble forth with poetic grace, revealing insights that invite the listener to read along as she sings. She is a marvelous singer and songwriter. -- Michael Miller, music critic, singer songwriter
