Getting InvolvedProgram Groups and ActivitiesCovenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (CUUPS) Explore the beauty of pagan, goddess-, and earth-centered spiritualities woven together with Unitarian Universalism. Our chapter of the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (CUUPS) has been associated with the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Columbia, South Carolina, for nearly two decades. We meet every Thursday, 7:00 - 8:00 PM. UU Coffeehouse The UU Coffeehouse is sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Columbia. The UU offers a family friendly, smoke and alcohol free listening environment for the appreciation of folk and singer/songwriter music. The UU is located at 2701 Heyward Street in Columbia, South Carolina, at the corner of Heyward and Woodrow Streets. Drum Lessons/Drum Circle West African master drummer, Amara Camara, conducts Djembe drum lessons/drum circle on Sunday afternoons. Class is from 3:30-4:30 pm, and the cost is $10 per class, $8 for students. Beautiful West African drums are provided. The money from the classes will be used to buy rice for the people of the Ratoma neighborhood in Conakry, Guinea. Rice, a staple of the diet, has become increasingly costly in Guinea, one of the poorest Countries in Africa, where people live on about $1 per day. The drum classes/drum circles are so much fun! Each week, we will work on a different piece and learn to play it together. You do not have to commit to a certain number of classes - just come when time allows and the spirit moves you. Those who want to observe classes are welcome. If you have questions about the classes, please contact Toni Jones at 260-6486. Forum We meet every Sunday at 9:30 AM in the Fellowship Library to discuss a wide range of topics. Music The UU Choir meets at the Fellowship every other week on Sunday for a rehearsal at 9:30 a.m. followed by a performance at the 11:00 a.m. service. No audition is necessary but most members have prior experience in choirs or in instrumental music (including piano). Choir members take joyful pleasure in performing interesting music and manage to mix a little humor into every rehearsal Science and Religion Discussion Group The Science and Religion Book Group meets the second Thursday of every other month (February, April, June, August, October, December) to discuss a book about some subject in the region where religion and science overlap. The book for each session is selected by consensus at the previous meeting and announced in the Unigram. Authors whose books we have read include Gould, Dennett, Ramachandran, Goodenough, Kurzweil, Hofstadter, Blackmore, Dawkins, Sagan, and Polkinghorne. September Set A Monthly Dinner Group that meets in the Social Hall of the Fellowship. Bring your own food and drinks. Voyagers is a social group for singles and couples in a surprisingly broad age range: 18-55. Voyagers meets for lunch (dutch treat) after Sunday morning services. We gather everyone who's interested during the coffee hour and usually decide on one of several restaurants within a mile or two of the fellowship. (We can even find veggie or vegan friendly on request!) Conversation ranges from the topic of that day's sermon to science fiction to upcoming live music to recent Supreme Court cases to celebrity news and beyond...you name it. Voyagers primarily communicates through a private Yahoo! Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/scvoyagers. We use the online group very informally to post interesting articles to discuss at a Sunday lunch, to share recipes from our occasional potlucks, to invite any and all interested Voyagers out for an impromptu dinner or movie or concert, to keep in touch with former Voyagers who have moved away, etc. When we meet you after services, we'll invite you to join the Yahoo! Group and you can fully participate as a Voyager if you'd like. No weird initiation ceremony required! Walk/Hike Group Women's Book Club A women's only reading group that meets at a new location each month to discuss previously agreeded upon books. See Calendar for details on time, book, and host. |
