"Having Dodged the Bullet"
Most of us lead pretty routine lives and are ill-prepared to deal with life's little dirty tricks. Morgan Maclachlan and Don Mohr were among those of us leading such routine lives until, some months ago, they had unexpected and potentially life-threatening medical problems. In this service Morgan and Don will reflect on their experiences, what they learned from them and how their encounters with their own mortality changed them.

"Our Joyful Challenge"
Rev. Patrick Price
Four years ago Rev. Patrick Price accepted and started his call to serve our congregation as minister. As we as a congregation are poised to celebrate our fiftieth anniversary and to engage a long-range plan for our future, Rev. Price reflects on the first four years of his ministry with the UUFC, the qualities of the covenant between minister and congregation, and his views on what our future ministry together may hold.
9:30am Forum: The Environment
The old joke is that organizing UUs is like trying to herd cats: it can't be done. Actually, it's not quite that bad. At the UUFC we have a set of bylaws which guide us in decision making and indicate the appropriate level at which decisions should be made.
The congregation makes the most important decisions: calling a minister, approving the budget, electing members and officers of the board.
The Board of Trustees is charged with policy making as well as handling administrative functions such as property insurance, approving delegates to General Assembly (GA), approving expenses, and overseeing the general needs of the congregation.
It is at the committee level that the day-to-day nuts and bolts, operational decisions are made. Whether to buy Religious Education (RE) materials, fix a leaky faucet, hold a fundraiser or introduce new elements into a worship service-- these are the kinds of decisions made in committees. There are times when two or more committees work in concert to implement a project. For instance, a project to refurbish the nursery might involve both RE and Building and Grounds (B&G).
One way to involve more members in the life of the congregation is to have strong, active committees involved in a variety of projects and activities. If you have some ideas you would like to see implemented, there is a committee that wants to work with you.

Cooperative Ministries
School Supply Drive
There are more than 12,000 children at or below poverty level in Richland and Lexington counties. Last year Cooperative Ministries was able to provide basic school supplies for 5,000 of those children to help them get a good start for the school year.
Last year our fellowship filled two large boxes with school supply donations. Let’s continue our tradition of generosity. Please bring in your donations of pencils, pens, spiral notebooks, crayons, notebook paper, glue, and pocket folders with brads to the collection box in the social hall by Sunday, August 8. Contributions of children’s books and used spiral notebooks will also be welcomed.
The Social Action Committee is also looking for volunteers to help sort, package, and distribute the school supplies. Nine UUFC members volunteered last year. The experience is very rewarding, so please call Jessica Porter at 808-6536 to volunteer.
Building and Grounds Update
To paraphrase a line from "Poltergeist II" - I'm BAAAAAACK! In case you haven't heard, I have agreed to chair the Buildings and Grounds committee again. I've asked Laura for some space in the Unigram to go over some B&G issues.
If you want to make any changes to the interior or exterior of the building, including painting and planting, please check with me first. Call me at home and leave a message, or e-mail me at AHendin@juno.com at least a week in advance of any potential activities.
There are several projects pending for this year. We may be able to take very inexpensive measures to correct the foundation problem in the RE wing. The soundboard station may be moved to a location in the sanctuary so the sound board operator can actually see what is going on with the service. We are getting prices on repairing or replacing the Library roof. We are looking at restaining the RE playground equipment to protect our investment in that very important equipment. The floor in the Senior High room needs to be repaired and re-tiled. The AIDS Memorial Garden has become a memorial JUNGLE, and needs tending. The rest rooms need hot running water. The stone wall on the Woodrow St. side of the building is disintegrating. One of the main entrance doors is not working properly.
And those are just the projects that I can think of off the top of my head that fall under the purview of Buildings and Grounds.
I desperately need volunteers to help with tending our large lawn and numerous gardens and trees. If there are any artisans out there skilled in replacing floor tiles and subfloors, please- HELP! If you know anything about evaluating and repairing building foundations - WE NEED YOU!! If you know anything about repairing stone work, CALL ME! If you know anything about repairing odd mechanical door hinges, WE CAN USE YOU!
Dear fellow members, B&G has a budget of $1,500 for the entire year. With that kind of funding, Buildings and Grounds can't begin to address building needs without skilled, VOLUNTEER help.
If you are interested in helping with Buildings and Grounds, either as a worker or to coordinate a specific project, please let me know!
Thanks
Andy Hendin
Upcoming B&G Opportunities
Sunday August 8, 1999
If you have any interest in computerized network wiring please plan on helping with the UUFC Computer Wiring Project. We will be installing wiring to network all the UUFC computers. John Reed will be supervising, lunch will be provided, and with enough hands this task should only take 2 - 3 hours. Please contact Andy Hendin or AHendin@juno.com for more information.
There will be a MAJOR Buildings and Grounds workday on Saturday October 3, 1999. If it is requested, I will attempt to provide day care. Lunch will be provided. See Andy Hendin for further info.
The Families First Committee will meet after the
service on August 8 with our adopted family to determine what needs the
family presently had and to plan for meeting their needs as they move toward
independence. Any questions, call Loren Freed or Dillard Thompson.
Administrator's Note
Well, it's getting to be that time of year again-- summer is drawing to a close, by the calendar if not by the thermometer, we are beginning to plan for the coming program year. I hope these bits of information will be helpful to you in your interactions with the administrative functions of our community.
Committee Chairs & Other Group Leaders: As the fall approaches our calendar is filling up quickly. Already, all the Saturday evenings from October to the end of 1999 are taken. In order to guarantee having the space you want when you want it, please reserve space for your regular meetings and special events NOW. Those who do so can be assured of having a place-- all others take their chances!
Money Matters Remember, questions about your pledge or contribution status should be directed to me. Addressing such inquiries to the Treasurer or Finance Committee can result in delays. If necessary, please have check numbers handy when asking for a verification of our records.
Also, as of July 1, 1999, requests for checks should be placed in the administrator's box in room one or brought to my attention.
Requests for reimbursement should be submitted as soon as possible after the expense is incurred in order for you to get your money in a timely manner and so our books will reflect accurately how and when we spend our money. There is often a short delay in reimbursement since all checks must be signed by the treasurer and because our cash flow is sometimes irregular.
Red Tape and Other Fun Stuff All board members, committee chairs, and anyone who coordinates events, organizes building use, or has a key to the building should have a copy of Red Tape and Other Fun Stuff, an explanation of the procedures which help our organization to run smoothly. Please see me for a copy if you do not have one.
Please feel free to come to me with questions or concerns about these things.
