The Power of Play
As we wrap up summer and Labor Day weekend, Rev. Price will explore the importance of play in our lives. What are some of the social, religious, psychological and even physical implications of play in our modern world? How does it helps us lead fuller lives?

Hate, Heritage, Fear and Power:
Some UU Reflections on the Confederate Naval Jack and Efforts to Move It
The Confederate naval flag which now flies from our capital dome and is displayed in the legislative chambers, and the efforts to move or remove it, are on going points of tension and pain for many in our state. For some, it is about hate, for others, heritage, and for others still, money. As the NAACP call to boycott South Carolina in response to this issue moves forward, what are some of the things we need to keep in mind and address, both as citizens and as Unitarian Universalists? This sermon is part of a larger dialogue which will result in a congregational vote on this issue October 3.
9:30am Forum: Responsibility
The process from this point on will be:
1. If you have any input regarding the draft resolution, contact one of the committee members by Sunday September 12.
2. People will be at a table in the Social Hall after services on Sunday September 5 and 12 if you'd like to express an opinion.
3. Wednesday September 8 at 7pm there will be an Adult Education session,"What It Was Like in the South in the '60s".
4. The committee will present a final draft of the resolution to the Board for approval at its Monday September 13 meeting.
5. The Board will approve or modify the draft resolution and send it to the congregation for a vote at the Congregational Meeting scheduled for Sunday October 3.
6. Assuming the final resolution is adopted by the congregation, we will circulate it as widely as possible including the press, political leaders, the NAACP and other UU congregations and organizations.
A Draft Resolution to Support the Economic Sanctions Imposed by the NAACP to Remove the Confederate Flag from the Capitol Dome of South Carolina
WHEREAS the first principle of the Unitarian Universalist faith requires respect for the inherent worth and dignity of all human beings; and
WHEREAS the other principles of our faith require justice, equity and compassion in human relations; spiritual growth in our congregations; a free and responsible search for truth and meaning; the use of the democratic process; the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all; and respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part; and
WHEREAS, the religious heritage of Unitarians and Universalists includes a 150 year history of fighting against slavery and oppression, with our forebears risking their lives and fortunes in this struggle; and
WHEREAS, we recognize that there are those who view the Confederate flag as a legitimate representation of their southern heritage;
WE BELIEVE that the Confederate flag that flies on the Capitol dome of this State, as so clearly stated in the South Carolina Articles of Secession, represents the heritage of slavery and is therefore rightfully offensive to African-Americans and thousands of other citizens of this State;
NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved this third day of October, 1999 by the congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Columbia, South Carolina that until this Confederate flag is removed from the Capitol dome and relocated to a place of historical, rather than sovereign context, we support the economic sanctions imposed by the NAACP.
WE FURTHER URGE all Unitarian Universalist congregations
in South Carolina, our national Unitarian Universalist Association and
the Thomas Jefferson District of the Unitarian Universalist Association
to join us in this resolution.

Y2K Celebration: In April 1950 articles of incorporation
were signed establishing the UUFC and we would like to celebrate our 50th
anniversary in a big way. We are looking for folks to help with planning.
Gertrude has done a lot of research to find old members and arranged for
musical performances. Don is working on the history project. There is still
lots more to do. Let's get together briefly after the service on Sunday,
Sept. 12, for a quick organizational meeting so we can establish some meeting
times. Ann Johnson
If you are an outgoing member of our leadership or if you have keys to our building that you no longer need, please return them to Laura Ingram. New committee chairs and other volunteers need them, and we would rather reuse existing keys than have new ones made.

Heart Circle will resume beginning in October. This is a new tradition in our Fellowship which provides opportunity to experience support and witness from others our community while engaging in one's own spiritual search, using the "talking stick" format borrowed from the Native American spiritual tradition. This is a very special experience and a chance to bond with others in a unique way. We meet the second Friday of each month. Next meeting is Friday, October 8- Call Loren Freed.

The next Music Listening group, on Friday, September 10, will feature live music. We will meet in the home of Bob Scott, who will play a Beethoven piano sonata. After that we will listen to recorded music that people bring. For directions and other information, call Bob.

A Typist Is Needed
Last spring we spent several nights gathering historical data about the UUFC for our upcoming 50th Anniversary celebration. All of that information is now on a number of sheets of flip chart paper. If someone could enter this information into a word processing program, it would be a huge help and you'd be greatly appreciated. If you are able and willing to do this, please contact the UUFC office (799-0845) or Don Mohr. Thanks in advance for the help.
