"Masculinity, Fear and Betrayal:

The Dilemma of Being Male in America"

Rev. Patrick Price

American men feel under siege in land and time when we are constantly told by the dominant culture that we are in control and experiencing unprecedented economic opportunities. What are the underlying realties behind the growing dis-ease men are experiencing? What are some implications and possible responses that will move us all toward greater health and fulfillment?

"Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time"

Mac Brown

How can we reconcile our view of Jesus as the Christ of the New Testament with historical information about his life and times? Is there a possibility that we can meet Jesus again as a transformational force in our lives?

"Video Poker: A UU Response"

Rev. Patrick Price

The November vote to consider banning or regulating video poker is stirring strong emotions and interesting arguments both for and against it. In the wake of publicity and the public educational panel we will host on this issue, what do we know and what are some of the conclusions we can draw?

Notice of

Congregational Meeting

October 3, 1999 12:15, to vote on establishment of an Endowment Committee and to vote on the resolution in support of the NAACP boycott.

--Ann Johnson Hurricane Floyd and UU Congregations

The floods that resulted from Hurricane Floyd have damaged at least three of our fellow UU congregations in North Carolina. The church in Shelter Neck was severely damaged and the religious education wing of the church in Wilmington was hit by a tree. As of last Thursday, Shelter Neck, which had recently been renovated, was almost completely inundated with lagoon water from the nearby pig farms.

Rev. Bob Murphy, the District disaster coordinator, will be coordinating relief efforts. He says they are still assessing the damages, but they know they will be enormous. In the next several days we'll probably receive a more formal notification, but the main need will be for money to help with clean-up and repairs. When we have a clearer picture of the exact need, we will have a special collection to help our fellow UUs. For more detailed and up-to-date information, see the TJ District webpage http://www.tjd.uua.org/floydflood.html

Please be thinking about how you can help.

"Meeting Jesus AGAIN for the First Time"

From the Building & Grounds Committee

The BIG October 2 workday will focus on exterior issues. The Memorial Garden will be tamed, the hexagonal areas will be maintained, raking will be done, and we will probably work on refinishing the RE playground equipment.

If you are aware of a building issue/problem that needs to be addressed by the Building and Grounds Committee, please fill out a Work Request form, which can be found in room 1 on the top shelf of the bookshelf between the two doors to the room. Please put your completed forms in the Building and Grounds box (box number five). These forms will be reviewed at least once a month. Complete forms will become part of our Building and Grounds "archives."

If you are planning to attend the workday, please contact Andy Hendin via email at Ahendin@scana.com.

It's not too late to start Talking About God

The 7-week video/discussion series "Talking About God" will be led by Rev. Price twice daily on Wednesdays, September 22 through November 3 in the Social Hall.

Everybody has an idea of God—even those who don't believe. But we seldom talk about our ideas and experiences of God. We can change that! This dynamic video series features major scholars, teachers and activists such as Jesus Seminar scholar Marcus Borg; Black Liberation Theologian, James Cone; Bishop John Shelby Spong and activist Janet Wolf engaging each other around such questions as:

One: What's Your Experience of God?

Two: How Do You Talk to God?

Three: Who Are You God?

Four: Where Is God in Your Life?

Five: What Is God Doing?

Six: Whose Side Is God On?

Seven: How Can Believers Live Together?

This series will also kick off our brown bag Lunch Time Learning series of programs on most Wednesdays, from noon until 2pm. Evening classes will meet Wednesdays from 7 to 9pm. Materials fee for the entire 7-week series is $20, or $4 per session. As usual fees maybe waived upon request. Advance registration by contacting the office is encouraged but not required. For more information contact Rev. Price.

Ritual Design Work Shop

By popular demand Rev. Price will be offering his Earth Religion based Ritual Design workshop, October 22 and 23. This workshop is open to all and aimed at those who are starting out on a Contemporary Pagan path but is also enriching for those with more experience. Sessions will be Friday, October 22, 6:30 to 9:30pm and Saturday, October 23, 9am to 4pm. Timely attendance at both sessions is required.

Advance registration by contacting the office is very much encouraged so we can provide pre-workshop instructions and readings and to get a sense of materials

needed. Fees are $25 per person or $45 per household and may be paid in advance or at the workshop. As usual, fees may be waived upon request. For more information contact Rev. Price.

Congregational Vote on the Resolution Supporting the NAACP

We all have an opportunity to support the democratic process within our congregation and in society at large on Sunday, October 3, 1999 at 12:15 p.m. when our congregation votes on establishment of an Endowment Committee and on the resolution in support of the NAACP boycott.

The Social Action Committee encourages all members to come Sunday to vote. The democratic process means that voting provides a close representation of the true views and opinions of the congregation. Please come vote if you support the resolution. Please come vote if you do not support the resolution. Please come vote even if you cannot decide whether or not to support the resolution. The Social Action Committee will facilitate one more meeting before Sunday’s vote. If you need more information on the resolution issue or are interested in taking part in planning and carrying out the related publicity, education, and service activities after the vote on the resolution, please come to an open meeting Friday, October 1st, 1999 at the Fellowship at 7:00 p.m.

The Boozer Fund

Contributors to the Boozer Fund, recall:

"Howard had a marvelous sense of humor. I don't remember seeing Howard without a smile on his face…. Thanks for Frances being ever-ready and gracious, the Fellowship enjoyed numerous meeting and dinners at the Boozers', always in a friendly atmosphere. You had a feeling that he know every one of us well and was interested in our lives. He somehow found time to converse with each one of us. " Gertrude Edge

"Howard took an interest in new scientific discoveries. His cuttings often contained new items which I had missed—and he always enjoyed my State of the Universe address. I recall his discussing the ingenious device which he had implanted for his heart. He pointed out that, if all else failed, it would give a gigantic pulse of electricity, impelling you six feet in the air, if you were lying down, by straightening out your heart."

Ron Edge

Tax deductible donations marked "the Boozer Fund" may be sent to the Fellowship.

Joys, Concerns, and Milestones

Baby Olivia Tinsley Shier was born prematurely to Konni and Darrell Shier on September 20. At birth she weighed 2 lbs and 11.3 oz. She is making progress in the neo-natal unit at Richland Memorial Hospital and they expect she will go home in December. Konni and Darrell ask that everyone keep their family in our thoughts and prayers.

Our grief at the death of our long time member Dr. Elmore Martin, Friday, September 24. A memorial service is planned for 1:00pm, Saturday, October 16, at the Fellowship with a reception to follow. The family will designate where donations may be sent in Elmore's name. Please contact the office for more details as they develop.

From Annette Walker: "Thank you for all your healing and loving thoughts, your cards, and your phone calls during my illness."

Our thoughts are with Loren Freed, whose feline companion, Maisie, died last week.

Big Thanks to Polly Scaglione for her gift back to UUFC and Yolanda Ganong for facilitating in the spirit of sharing.

R.E. Classes for October

- All Elementary R.E. classes will meet each Sunday in October, from 11:00am to 12:15pm. The nursery will be available for babies and toddlers from 10:45am until 12:15pm. Nursery age( 0-2)
Our nursery has been graced with many blessings lately. We have lots of new toys and baby friendly items, and we have 2 wonderful caregivers Larissa and Chaim Aginskaya. They take great care of our nursery little ones, so parents can feel free to enjoy the service. Parents, please sign in when you leave your child in the nursery, so we can find you if there is a problem. Preschool class:
Our preschool class meets in room 4 and has a wonderful team of teachers. They have been reading stories, and actually learning some Islamic words and talking about our Muslim friends.
They are also learning how we are all different, and yet, the same in many ways.  Kindergarten-1st grade
Our K-1 kids meet in room 7.  They have been learning the Muslim greeting, "a-salaam a laikum" and talking about Allah. They have made some beautiful artwork and are going to be learning about the Muslim prophet Muhammed Please look in their room and enjoy their beautiful work.
2nd-3rd grade
This group meets in room 9, the last room on the right. They have also been studying Islamic words and meanings, including Allah, Qu'ran, and the 7 pillars of Islam. They like to dress in costume and dramatize stories. They are learning how Islam is different from Unitarian Universalism, but how people are all special and deserve respect.

4th and 5th grade
This group meets in room 6 and has been studying Islam, and working on making a replica of the Ka'bah, the sacred center of Islamic worship. The Ka'bah houses an ancient stone, supposedly found by Adam. When Muslims make the pilgrimage to Mecca, they walk around the Ka'bah 7 times, chanting and praying as they do. Every serious Muslim must try to make the pilgrimage to Mecca in his or her lifetime, to see the Ka'bah and worship Allah.  Our 4-5th graders have also been learning about other aspects of Islam, and even made some Islamic snacks from pistachios and almonds.  RE Suggestion Box Ready for Your Input
In response to several people's request, there is now a suggestion/comment box on the RE table in the Social Hall. These comments can be directed to the DRE, the RE Council or the RE teachers, or all three. We are looking for ways to improve our program. Your comments can be anonymous or you can state your name. If you want someone to call you regarding your comment, please leave a phone number. We look forward to hearing from you!

R.E. Registration Continues   If you have not registered your elementary age children in our RE program, please stop at the registration table and do so. We need accurate information to compile our attendance sheets and we also need to know everyone's name! Please don't forget!
