"Video Poker: A UU Response"

Rev. Patrick Price

The November vote to consider banning or regulating video poker is stirring strong emotions and interesting arguments both for and against it. In the wake of publicity and the public educational panel we will host on this issue, what do we know and what are some of the conclusions we can draw?

President's Note

At the congregational meeting on October 3, 1999, a proposal was passed to establish an endowment committee as part of our by-laws and a resolution passed to support the NAACP economic boycott.

Ann Johnson

Joys, Concerns and Milestones

Our Sympathies are with Konni and Darrell Shier whose premature baby Olivia died on the morning of Monday, October 11. There will be a memorial service in Charleston. The family wishes to express their thanks for the congregation's prayers and support. They would appreciate cards but ask that folks refrain from calling at this time. Inquiries may be directed to the church office.

Our sorrow at the sudden and untimely death of member John Gelinas on Sunday, October 10. Our deepest condolences to his wife Judy, daughter Elise and all of their family. A viewing was held at Greenlawn Mortuary the following Tuesday, and a grave side service was conducted on Wednesday by Rev. Price. A memorial service at the Fellowship is being scheduled at this time. Please contact the office for details of times and ways to be of support.

Don Cooper whose mother died last week in Florida.

Concerns for:

Polly Scaglione recently cracked a rib and is recovering from an unrelated infection. She would appreciate calls.

Fred and Evelyn Erb had to return sooner than planned from their trip to England and Scotland because Fred broke his leg. He is in a cast at their home in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Joys and milestones for:

Tom and Judy Turnipseed on the birth of their first grandchild, Madeline Louise Turnipseed, October 7th.

Loren Freed who celebrated her 40th birthday October 10th.

Laura McCarthy, daughter of Mary Etta McCarthy, on her marriage to Jeffrey Louden, October 9. Rev. Price officiated.

Elmore Martin Memorial Service, Saturday, October 16, 1:00pm at UUFC

Elmore Martin was a beloved member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and of many other groups, formal and informal. His daughter Tina Martin and his family are constructing a memory book of information and especially stories and reminiscences about Elmore, his life and the experiences of others with him. Please send any such that you might have to her (tmartin@ccsf.cc.ca.us or 2630 19th Ave., San Francisco CA 94116), and a copy to me to possible use for his memorial service, as soon as possible. There will be opportunities to share stories during and after the memorial service as well. Thank you, Patrick Price.

Party in Emore Martin's Honor

According to Elmore's family he wanted people to celebrate his life the way he lived it, with fun and appreciation. Therefore, following the service and reception Saturday a party will be given by Cheryl McClelland and Elmore's oldest daughter, Dana at Cheryl's house just a few blocks from the fellowship. There will be snacks and beverage. Please bring a dish or a bottle of your favorite beverage to share. But if you can't, come anyway.

You can still start Talking about God

The 7-week video/discussion series "Talking About God" is being led by Rev. Price twice daily on Wednesdays through November 3 in the Social Hall. Everybody has an idea of God-- even those who don't believe. But we seldom talk about our ideas and experiences of God. We can change that! This dynamic video series features major scholars, teachers and activists such as Jesus Seminar scholar Marcus Borg; Black Liberation Theologian, James Cone; Bishop John Shelby Spong and activist Janet Wolf engaging each other around such questions as:

Four: Where Is God in Your Life?

Five: What Is God Doing?

Six: Whose Side Is God On?

Seven: How Can Believers Live Together?

This series kicks off our brown bag Lunch Time Learning series of programs on most Wednesdays, from noon until 2pm. Evening classes will meet Wednesdays from 7 to 9pm. Materials fee for the entire 7-week series is $20, or $4 per session. As usual fees maybe waived upon request. Advance registration by contacting the office is encouraged but not required. For more information contact Rev. Price.

Advance registration by contacting the office is very much encouraged so we can provide pre-workshop instructions and readings and to get a sense of materials needed. Fees are $25 per person or $45 per household and may be paid in advance or at the workshop. As usual, fees may be waived upon request. For more information contact Rev. Price.

The Boozer Fund

Emeritus Professor Hal French of Religious Studies, USC recalls being interim lay leader for the Fellowship (before the arrival of Christine Robinson): "A most pleasant part of my role was that Frances Boozer was president of the Fellowship. There were many occasions to be in Howard and Frances's home, to enjoy their warm hospitality, and to know them as friends. Howard was working in education, also, and we called on him once for a leadership role in a program that we were sponsoring in Religious Studies at the University.

Howard always seemed to have well-considered, sage counsel on a wide range of subjects. You saw him smile, then share an observation that went beneath the surface of the issue in question. He was a friend to the Fellowship, and to all of his who knew a him and valued the warmth and wisdom that he radiated, always modestly, with winsome, self-deprecating humor. And we will all remember how generously he gathered and shared so much material, each item reflecting something of what he was currently pondering. We carry his impress with us."

Contributions to the Howard and Frances Boozer Fund are welcomed at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship office via mail or collection plate. Please designate "The Boozer Fund."

Thank you, the Boozer Fund Committee _____________________________

Chant Group Discontinued
