The Reluctant Radical: William Ellery Channing

and the Origins of American Unitarianism

Rev. Patrick Price

William Ellery Channing has been called "the father of American Unitarianism." Who was this unassuming man who helped to found our religion and shaped much of early ninetieth century American thought? What did he offer then and what does he offer to us now nearly two hundred years later? This is also a new member recognition and signing service.

What Do You Think?

Not long ago this congregation voted to support the NAACP boycott in SC. Now the question arises, how can we best translate these words into meaningful action. One suggestion that comes from our social action committee and has a fair amount of support is that we post pone our 50th anniversary celebration in 2000 until the flag comes down. This is not a decision the board want to make unilaterally because it is the kind of decision which defines who we are as a congregation. We will be facilitating further opportunities for dialogue. PLEASE! Talk with your friends and let us know!

Announcements

On a personal note, I will be away visiting my family in Texas over Thanksgiving and will be back in the office November 29. If in my absence, you need to speak with a minister, please call Rev. Carol Jackson, 803-432-6939, or Rev. Dan Weck, 803-712-6576. For other pastoral needs call Caring Committee Chair, Jennifer Cobb or the office. I will also retrieve my voice mail periodically. Have a happy Thanksgiving. Patrick

Administrator's Note

Dear Members and Friends:

I will be out of the office beginning on Wednesday, November 24, and will return on Monday, December 20. During this time, Susan Corbett will fill in as temporary administrator, so you will find a familiar face in the office and hear a familiar voice on the phone.

Although I expect to be attending services and social events and will be present on some occasions as a volunteer youth advisor, I will not be active in my role as office administrator during this time. I thank you all in advance for respecting my privacy.

Laura

Office closed Wed. - Fri., Nov. 24-26

Have you been thinking about

joining the Fellowship?

On December 5th, we will have another new member inclusion service. Several people are already planning to sign the Membership Book during the service on that date. Following this special service, we will have a welcoming congregational potluck followed by a new member orientation in the early afternoon. Members are encouraged to bring a dish to share and join us in welcoming our new members. If you have been thinking about joining us, please talk with our minister Patrick Price or a member of the membership committee: Mary Maclachlan, Donald Cooper, Don Mohr, Carita Barr, Gertrude Edge, Alice Leeper, Sharyn Walters, Tootsie Holland.

UU Men's Group, Wednesday, Dec. 8th6:30 to 8:30 / Dinner will be served

Please join your fellow man for dinner and the final organizational meeting to discuss the formation of a UUFC Men's Group. This will be the final organizational meeting as we are planning to start regular meetings in January. We would greatly appreciate input and participation from the UUFC community of men. For more information about this meeting please contact Patrick Price at the UUFC (REVPDPRICE@aol.com) or Tom Morton at tmorton@logicsouth.com. A collection will be taken to offset the cost of providing dinner (approximately $5). Please RSVP myself or Patrick if you are planning to attend.

The next Partner Church Committee meeting will be held at 12:30 on Sunday, December 5, 1999, in room 8. For more information, please call Jessica Slotkin Donahue. All are welcome!

The Technology Committee met recently to assess the technological needs of staff, Committee Chairs, and other interested parties. The meeting was informative, although not as well attended as hoped. If you are a staff member or a committee chair, and you have technological needs within the Fellowship, please fill out a Technology Survey Form! If you need a copy of the form, they can be found in the mailbox below the window in Room 1 in the next to the last rows. If you have questions, or need further information, please contact Heather Cunningham at heather@lfs-sc.org.

Netheads is a listing of UUs with personal websites. It is a way to network and share our lives, work, hobbies, and more with one another. If folks are interested they can send their name, email, site's URL, and 3-5 words describing the site to me at bookduck@yahoo.com.

Last year our congregation brightened the holidays for people living with AIDS in our community…. Let's Do It Again!

Last holiday season, our gift drive and special collection for PALSS was a great success. This year our Senior High Youth Group is sponsoring the PALSS gift drive and is asking for the congregation's support in the form of donations of gloves, hats, scarves, umbrellas, socks, underwear, sweaters, coats, shirts, blouses, blankets, sheets, pillows, books, tapes, videos, radios, toiletries, towels, backpacks, batteries, movie tickets, fast food coupons, grocery store gift certificates, and Bibles.

It would be great to have the gifts in hand by the Friday, December 3, so that the youth can wrap them during the lock-in that evening.

Joys & Concerns

Longtime member Polly Scaglione died on Sunday morning, after a long battle with cancer. Polly was cremated on Monday, and a memorial service will be held at 7:00 on the evening of Wednesday, November 24.

Our thoughts are with Dave and Lynn Sparrow. Dave's dad died in Chicago last week after a long illness.

Announcing....

The search for balance within our Fellowship is always to be, it seems. The question of whether to include announcements in the worship service or not continues to be a divisive debate. On one hand of the issue, the worship service is viewed as a time when "business" should be absent. On the other hand, the worship service is observed as a time when the greatest quantity of members and friends are present and attentive to the distribution of pertinent information. Both sides of this debate have valid points for their opinions.

Unfortunately, in the past, the announcement portion of the service had become a Circus of Chaos. For this reason, the announcements were dropped from the service last spring. Persons needing to make announcements were encouraged to give them during the Coffee Hour after the service. While this is a fair alternative, it is observed to be a painful interruption for both the person giving the announcement, and the people engaged in delightful conversation. A probable outcome from the lack of announcements all around is a downfall in the number of people attending Fellowship events, including fundraisers and social "Getting-to-know-you" functions.

So, in a valiant endeavor to satisfy both camps (we are hopeful, eh?), the Worship Committee will oversee a better, more structured announcements format for a temporary period. In order to do this, we will implement and manage this feature, with the following policies and with your cooperation:

1. An announcement form, which can be found in room 1 in the mailbox under the window, must be completed and in the Worship Committee mailbox by 10am the Friday prior to the Sunday in which the announcement is to be given. They will only be received and reviewed on the announcement form.

2. The announcements will be brief, give only pertinent information, will not include phone numbers or physical or email addresses, and will not include acronyms. If you use an acronym, you will have to include the full name of the organization.

3. A contact person or someone knowledgeable about the event or information will be present in the service to indicate who they are and present during the Coffee Hour to answer any questions.

4. Only 3 or 4 announcements will be given during a service.

5. Regular committee meetings, events, and gatherings will not be announced. Specially held meetings, which are open to the entire congregation and are used for the purpose of sharing information or soliciting new members, will be announced if an announcement form is turned in for the event. In addition to the announcement, you are strongly advised to utilize the "tabling" method currently in use by many committees in the Social Hall. The announcement in the service should compliment the advertising you are presently using and not be relied upon as a sole communique. For regularly scheduled meetings, chairs are encouraged to either email or telephone members with the dates for their meetings.

In advance, the Worship Committee wants to thank everyone who will use this service for your cooperation and understanding of the reasons for the structure. We would also like to thank those strongly opposed for your open mind and honest feedback during our trial period. If you have any questions or comments about your support for or against this decision, please feel free to leave a brief note in the Worship Committee box, or via email to Heather Cunningham at heather@lfs-sc.org.

Thursday, November 25, Thanksgiving Day Covered Dish

If you don’t have any other commitments, please plan to join us for dinner at the UUFC. Don and Pat Mohr will cook ham, turkey, dressing and giblet gravy. You can bring your favorite traditional Thanksgiving side dishes, wine, or other beverages. We’ll ask for a donation of $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for kids to help pay for the turkey and ham. Any money collected in excess of cost will go to the UUFC. (Kids are welcome, but we won’t have child care so parents will need to be responsible for them.)

Dinner will be served at 6:30 PM. And Don and Pat do need some help setting up that afternoon and cleaning up afterwards.

If you would like to join us, call the UUFC (799-0845) or the Mohr’s no later than Monday, November 22. (It’s important to call so we know how big the turkey needs to be!!) If you can volunteer to help set up or clean up, please include that when you call.

Practical Magical Cakes??

Well, maybe not Practical... Actually, the More Cakes group will be watching the movie Practical Magic in our December meeting. This is a must-see movie which asserts "There's a little witch in every woman"!!

Everyone who will be attending is asked to bring a little snack to share or something to sip on. There will, of course, be a brief check-in starting at 7pm, and we will start the movie at 7:30, on December 14th.

For magical answers to your mystical questions, please contact Heather Cunningham at heather@lfs-sc.org. Thanks, and Happy Holly-days!!

Solstice Spiral Dance

The coming 1999 Winter Solstice holds many fascinating meanings for spiritualists and scientists alike! It is the Solstice, of course, and a Full Moon, AND a Lunar Perigee. Perigee is the time in the year when the Moon is closest to the Earth, shining a whole 14% closer than usual!! In celebration of this remarkable marriage of Solar and Lunar forces, the UUFC will host a special Spiral Dance Service! After a few words of honor and reverence from both the Spiritual and Scientific perspectives found in our fellowship, we will create a spiral, illustrating our common interdependence to the web of life. Afterwards, we will enjoy hot cocoa, cookies, and each other's blessed company!

The service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 22nd, will begin at 7pm in the Fellowship Social Hall and is open to the public (so bring your friends and family!). If you would like to help in the planning process or have any questions, please feel free to contact via email to heather@lfs-sc.org. I look forward to celebrating this Wonderful, Natural occurrence!!
